ABOUT NORMSKI
Photographer, broadcaster and DJ Normski has been documenting London culture since he was seventeen. His lens captured the UK’s emerging hip hop scene and icons from Public Enemy and Run-DMC to Wu-Tang Clan and Miles Davis. Former presenter of BBC Two’s Dance Energy, his work sits in the V&A’s permanent collection and has been shown at Tate Britain, Somerset House and the Smithsonian. MALLET x Normski “Got Soul” brings that archive to limited edition trainers and apparel.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Normski worked closely with the MALLET design team on every detail. The GRFTR Lite’s outsole is printed in N-tooth, a custom houndstooth built from his initial. The Kingsbury features a transparent tread with an embedded contact sheet print: Ice Cube on one side, a reworked portrait of Normski on the other. Orange, his favourite colour, runs throughout as a nod to the Roland 808 drum machine. The collection is completed by T-shirts featuring photography from his archive.
THE SHOOT
The campaign was shot where Normski’s work begins: in the darkroom. Starting at Rapid Eye in London, the shoot moved from the red light of the developing room to a graffitied alleyway, connecting the craft behind his images with the streets that shaped them. Analogue process, London backdrop, real culture.
